At times like these I indulge in the material things; in the last few days I’ve gotten a new phone, dyed my hair, and splurged on some high-end makeup. I hate a lot of things about consumerism, but I sure am participating in it lately.
That’s because people change, I changed, and it’s important to me that my appearance shows who I am now. I know that buying things won’t make me happy and that my appearance isn’t as important as my brain, but for everyday confidence, it sure would help if I looked how I feel.
Inside I am an intelligent, collected bad-ass ready to take on anything in my way. Basically, inside I am so much cooler than I am in reality. Still, that doesn’t mean I need to dress in clothes my mom bought me in the 7th grade still. Seasons change and with them so do people, and there’s something incredibly comforting knowing that the persona you’re putting out to people is the one you feel inside as well.
So with this summer season, whether you’re going back home to live with your parents for a few months or backpacking around the world alone, I encourage you to get in touch with who you are in this moment in your life. What is it you want out of life? What do you need to work on? Are you happy in your skin, and are you happy with how you’re spending your time? Answer those questions for yourself and then follow them up with: if I’m not happy, why? What needs to change? And just change it.
There is no shame in splurging on an item that makes you feel confident or sexy. There’s also no shame in going bare faced all summer and rocking short shorts, no matter the condition of your skin or the size of your body. I want you to sort through all the stress the previous months put you through and everything in your head until you find where you, personally, are at, and use that to put your best you forward for the rest of summer (or life, life is good too).
Don’t let the sun outshine you this season. Be the best, happiest you you can be. x.
