Dear Whoever You Are,…

I hope this finds you well. I hope you’re doing well. It’s okay if you’re not.

That’s all I want you to know: everything is okay. Even if you’re struggling, you will be alright, as long as you keep your will to survive. Do keep that.

I’ll never pretend to know what you’re going through (I don’t even know who you are), but I do know that humans are resilient. I know that out of all of the animals we are the ones that made cities and infrastructure, and despite the bad things that have come from that, you can’t deny that we are skilled at making the world adapt to us. When we’re cold we make fires and electric blankets and heating. When we’re poor we find new resources and develop trade. In many ways, this is our world.

Make it your world. I’m not saying become a dictator; I’m saying it’s okay to be selfish (you think people came up with those inventions without a selfish motive?). It’s okay to want whatever it is that you truly want. Not that thing you think you want, but the one you’re afraid to want. The one you want so badly it scares you. Embrace that fear and go for it. Allow yourself to fight for what you really want and in that find fulfillment.

Do not, however, mistake happiness for fulfillment. If all you want in life is to be happy, then chase the things that make you happy, whatever they may be, and enjoy them wholeheartedly. But if your heart races for greatness, fulfillment will be hard, and take time, and you may never fully be happy with your work. And that will still be okay, because that is how greatness happens. It is only by chasing unreachable standards that we manage excellence.

Work hard, at all costs. Stand up for yourself. Take care of your health. Make sure you have at least one person you can laugh with. And never take no for an answer. Unless it’s about intercourse, then always take no as an answer. And love yourself, because that is one of the biggest accomplishments of all.

Good luck. x.
